20261009-1106-air-hub-mini-esp32c6 Add an Air Hub Mini on ESP32-C6 with EFR32MG21 and Ethernet, without Linux

  • status: completed
  • createdAt: 2026-10-09 11:06
  • approvedAt: 2026-10-09 11:20 (owner answered the four decisions)
  • relatedTask: 20261009-1106-air-hub-mini-esp32c6

Air Hub spec R1.3 (commit 7a263e9) has two Linux products:

  • Air Hub (AH-19, 59 USD): MYZR SSD2351 stamp-hole core board + EFR32MG21 + ESP32-C6 (Wi-Fi, configuration, CAN). BOM 30.1–37.1 USD from the reference-board part list; landed-cost cap 19.18–22.13; the electronics alone (23.1) exceed the cap.
  • Air Hub Pro (AH-20, 119 USD): RK3506J stamp-hole core board + EFR32MG21 + ESP32-C6 + CMT2300A. BOM 37.6–44.6 against 38.68–44.63.

Spec §1 states "Air Hub needs Linux" (2026-09-12): local MQTT broker, policy point, Matter controller / bridge, Zigbee and Thread hosts and P09 hosting run on it. Requirements GW-11 (the C6 only forwards CAN frames that Linux authorised), GW-13, SEC-05, §3.1 and SW-O-02 are written around a Linux SoC. REG-01…06 set the certification level for every SKU.

The owner asked for a third product using only ESP32-C6-MINI-1, EFR32MG21 and a LAN port.

Parts (LCSC 2026-10-09 unless noted): ESP32-C6-MINI-1-N4 2.85 @1.3k (−40…+85 °C), ESP32-C6-MINI-1-H4 3.10 (−40…+105 °C); W5500 SPI Ethernet controller with MAC and PHY 1.77 @1k; EFR32MG21 link 2.9 (reference-board page §6). ESP32-C6 has no Ethernet MAC, one 802.15.4 / BLE / Wi-Fi radio, two TWAI controllers, a USB serial/JTAG port, 4 MB flash in the module and 512 KB SRAM. The MINI-1 module exposes 22 GPIO; the Mini needs about 19–21 (UART with flow control, reset and boot for EFR32MG21; SPI, interrupt and reset for W5500; TWAI; USB; button; LEDs).

BOM by the reference-board method (USD):

Item Air Hub (AH-19) Air Hub Mini
Power, protection, input filter, watchdog 4.7 4.4 (no core-board rail)
CAN (TJA1463, choke, ESD) 1.8 1.8
Ethernet 2.1 (RMII PHY + RJ45) 3.0 (W5500 + crystal + RJ45)
EFR32MG21 link 2.9 2.9
ESP32-C6 2.9 2.9
USB, button, LEDs, headers, passives 0.8 0.8
PCB 1.1 1.0
Core board 6.8 —
Electronics 23.1 16.8
Connector, enclosure, SMT and test 7.0–14.0 7.0–14.0
Total 30.1–37.1 23.8–30.8

With the connector plus enclosure at 3–4 USD the Mini is 21.8–24.3. Against a 59 USD cap (19.18–22.13) it is over by 1.7–11.6 as listed and between 0.3 under and 5.1 over after that cost-down; against a 49 USD cap (15.93–18.38) it is over in every case.

Spec P05-air-hub.md R1.4, new product Air Hub Mini (combination AH-21):

  1. §1: "Air Hub needs Linux" becomes a statement about Air Hub and Air Hub Pro; add the Mini paragraph: ESP32-C6-MINI-1 as the only controller (no Linux), EFR32MG21 for Air's BLE, W5500 for Ethernet, the C6's Wi-Fi as second uplink and its BLE for configuration, CAN from the C6 TWAI (decision 1). No 433 MHz.
  2. §2.1 / §2.3 / §2.4: product row, AH-21 row, platform entry "H16 ESP32-C6 (MCU, no Linux)", BOM and gap as above, capacity and log targets restated for 4 MB flash and 512 KB RAM, industrial temperature (no deviation).
  3. §3: scope line and a per-product applicability table for the Linux-dependent items. On the Mini: GW-01…06, SYS-02/03, SEC-01…05, AIR-05, GW-10, IF-01, MFG-01/02, REG-01…06 apply; GW-07 applies to the BLE image only (decision 3); GW-09 does not apply; GW-11 cannot hold as written. New GW-14 (Mini): the C6 is network-facing and drives the CAN bus, so CAN frames are produced only by the authorisation path after GW-01 checks; network and configuration inputs are parsed in a separate task with no CAN API; secure boot, flash encryption and signed OTA with rollback are mandatory; debug ports locked in production; V-03 attempts CAN injection from the network side.
  4. §3.1 / §4 / §5 / §6: the Mini is a single point like Linux on the other products; local MQTT broker, Matter controller, Zigbee coordinator host and P09 hosting are not provided; it is an MQTT client and a Matter bridge device for Air buttons (capacity to be measured).
  5. §7: Mini compliance (two 2.4 GHz transmitters: EFR32MG21 chip-down, C6 pre-certified module).
  6. §8: AIR-O-03 adds AH-21; new AIR-O-15: Mini firmware platform (ESP-IDF in C or Rust), Matter bridge capacity, Thread RCP / Zigbee use of EFR32MG21, GPIO budget, prices.
  7. §9 change-log row.

Design appendix R1.0 (architecture, interfaces, recovery for the Mini), reference-board page (pin allocation, power tree, part list and BOM column for the Mini; no schematic or board is generated in this task), guide (applicability, V-03 addition, quotation line), brief, index, platform evaluation §8, switch line spec, indexes, product plan §P5 / §5, open questions, compliance matrix. Changelog, task and plan status.

Decisions requested (recommended first):

  1. CAN on the Mini: keep CAN (C6 TWAI + TJA1463, 1.8 USD); without it the Mini cannot reach Core or accept Key and is only an IP bridge.
  2. Prices: Mini 59 USD; Air Hub (SSD2351, Linux) moves to 79 USD (cap 25.68–29.63, its BOM 30.1–37.1 then misses by 0.5–11.4 instead of 8.0–17.9); Pro stays 119 USD. Alternative: Mini 49 USD with Air Hub unchanged, which leaves both entry products over their caps.
  3. EFR32MG21 on the Mini: BLE image only is committed; Thread RCP and Zigbee are left to AIR-O-15 because the hosts would run on the C6.
  4. Wi-Fi: kept as second uplink and configuration channel (no extra part).
  • The Mini drops capabilities the 2026-09-12 positioning gave to Air Hub; sales material must not present it as a local broker, Matter controller or P09 host.
  • A network-facing MCU on the control bus: GW-14 replaces the Linux / C6 separation of GW-11.
  • 512 KB RAM for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, TLS, MQTT, Matter bridge and 32 Air pairings is unproven.
  • GPIO budget of the MINI-1 module is nearly exhausted; the WROOM-1 module is the fallback.
  • BOM figures are LCSC retail and part-list estimates, not quotes.

About 14 documentation files; no code, no schematic or PCB in this task.

  • ESP32-C6 only, C6 BLE for Air, no EFR32MG21 (about 2.9 USD less; shared radio capacity risk).
  • Wi-Fi only without W5500 (about 3.0 USD less).
  • Lower the Air Hub (SSD2351) price target instead of adding a product (does not close the gap).
  • 2026-10-09: owner asked for the Mini ("增加一个迷你版本,只用ESP32-C6-MINI-1 + EFR32MG21 + lan").
  • 2026-10-09: decisions ("1,需要带 2,不变 3,通过软件切换不同的功能,c6做刷机通道 4,保留"): the Mini has CAN; existing prices stay (Air Hub 59 USD, Pro 119 USD), so the Mini takes the 49 USD alternative (cap 15.93–18.38; gap 5.4–14.9, or 3.4–8.4 after the connector and enclosure cost-down); EFR32MG21 on the Mini switches function by signed image like the other products (GW-07), with the ESP32-C6 as the flashing channel; Wi-Fi is kept. This supersedes proposal item "BLE image only" and decision 2's recommended prices.
